Need to move a domain from one GoDaddy account to another? This step-by-step guide covers the GoDaddy account change process and what to expect during the transfer.
How to Transfer a Domain to Another GoDaddy Account: Step-by-Step
Whether you're handing off a domain to a client, consolidating accounts, or reorganizing your domain portfolio, GoDaddy makes it possible to move domains between accounts. Here's how to do it correctly.
Two Methods for Moving Domains Between GoDaddy Accounts
Method 1: GoDaddy Account Change (Fastest)
GoDaddy's internal account change feature moves a domain between two GoDaddy accounts without a full registrar transfer. It typically completes within minutes to a few hours.
Requirements:
- Both accounts must be GoDaddy accounts
- The domain must not be in a locked or pending transfer state
- The domain must not have expired
Steps:
On the sending account:
- Log in to GoDaddy
- Go to My Products → Domains
- Click the domain you want to transfer
- Find Domain Account Change (may be under a settings or transfer menu)
- Enter the receiving account's Customer Number
- Confirm the transfer request
Getting the Customer Number: The receiving account holder can find their Customer Number by logging in to GoDaddy → clicking their name → Account Settings → Customer #.
On the receiving account:
- GoDaddy sends an email notification
- Log in and accept the incoming domain
- The domain appears in the account
Method 2: Standard Registrar Transfer
If the Account Change feature isn't available (some domain types or account situations), you can do a standard transfer:
- Unlock the domain in the sending account
- Get the authorization (EPP) code — see our domain transfer guide for full details
- Initiate a transfer from the receiving GoDaddy account
- Complete the transfer (5–7 days)
This method adds one year to the domain's registration.
What Transfers With the Domain
When you move a domain between GoDaddy accounts:
- The domain registration transfers
- DNS records typically transfer with the domain
- Domain privacy settings may need to be re-enabled in the new account
- Any hosting or email products associated with the domain stay in the original account
Common Issues
"Domain not eligible for transfer": The domain may be in a 60-day lock period after recent registration or transfer.
Authorization email not received: Check spam folders. The email goes to the address on the receiving account.
DNS records changed: After the transfer, verify your DNS records are still correct and your website and email are functioning. Also read: how to move a GoDaddy domain between accounts.
