How to Move a GoDaddy Domain to Another GoDaddy Account

Moving a domain between two GoDaddy accounts is different from transferring to a different registrar. GoDaddy has a specific process for account-to-account transfers that's faster and simpler than a full registrar transfer.

Common Reasons to Move a Domain Between GoDaddy Accounts

  • Transferring a domain to a client after building their website
  • Consolidating multiple GoDaddy accounts into one
  • Separating business domains from personal domains
  • Giving a domain to a business partner or new owner

Method 1: Domain Account Change (Recommended)

GoDaddy's "Account Change" feature is the fastest way to move a domain between two GoDaddy accounts. It typically completes within minutes rather than the 5–7 days required for a full registrar transfer.

Step 1: Get the Receiving Account's Customer Number

The person receiving the domain needs to provide you with their GoDaddy Customer Number. They can find this by:

  1. Logging in to GoDaddy
  2. Clicking their name in the top right
  3. Going to Account Settings
  4. Finding their Customer # (also called Customer ID)

Step 2: Initiate the Transfer from the Sending Account

  1. Log in to the GoDaddy account that currently owns the domain
  2. Go to My Products → Domains
  3. Click the domain you want to transfer
  4. Look for Domain Account Change or Transfer Domain to Another GoDaddy Account
  5. Enter the receiving account's Customer Number
  6. Confirm the transfer

Step 3: Receiving Account Accepts the Transfer

GoDaddy will send an email to the receiving account. The recipient needs to:

  1. Log in to their GoDaddy account
  2. Accept the incoming domain transfer
  3. The domain will appear in their account

Method 2: Full Registrar Transfer

If the Account Change method isn't available for your domain, you can do a full domain transfer:

  1. Unlock the domain in the sending account
  2. Get the authorization code
  3. Initiate a transfer from the receiving GoDaddy account using the authorization code

This takes 5–7 days and includes a one-year registration extension.

What Happens to DNS Records?

When you move a domain between GoDaddy accounts, the DNS records typically transfer with the domain. For a more detailed walkthrough, see how to transfer a domain to another GoDaddy account. However, it's good practice to document your current DNS configuration before initiating the transfer, in case anything needs to be reconfigured.
