A complete guide to transferring a GoDaddy domain from one account to another — whether you are moving to a new account, giving a domain to a client, or consolidating your portfolio.
Transfer GoDaddy Domain from One Account to Another: Complete Guide
Transferring a domain between GoDaddy accounts is a common task for web developers, agencies, and business owners consolidating their domain portfolios. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Transfer a Domain Between GoDaddy Accounts?
- Client handoff: You registered a domain for a client and now need to transfer it to their account
- Account consolidation: You have multiple GoDaddy accounts and want to manage everything in one place
- Business sale: You're selling a business and the domain needs to go to the new owner
- Organizational change: A domain needs to move from a personal account to a business account
The GoDaddy Account Change Process
GoDaddy's Account Change feature is the fastest and simplest way to move a domain between two GoDaddy accounts. Unlike a standard registrar transfer, it doesn't require an authorization code and typically completes within hours.
What You Need
- The Customer Number of the receiving GoDaddy account
- The domain must be active (not expired or in a pending transfer state)
- The domain must not be in a 60-day lock period
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Get the receiving account's Customer Number
The person receiving the domain needs to provide their GoDaddy Customer Number:
- Log in to GoDaddy
- Click account name → Account Settings
- Find Customer # (a numeric ID)
Step 2: Initiate the transfer from the sending account
- Log in to the GoDaddy account that owns the domain
- Navigate to My Products → Domains → Manage All
- Click the domain name to open its settings
- Look for Transfer Domain or Domain Account Change
- Select Transfer to Another GoDaddy Account
- Enter the receiving account's Customer Number
- Review and confirm
Step 3: Receiving account accepts
GoDaddy sends an email to the receiving account. The recipient:
- Logs in to GoDaddy
- Finds the pending transfer notification
- Accepts the domain
The domain moves to the new account, usually within a few hours.
After the Transfer: What to Check
DNS records: Verify that DNS records transferred correctly. Check that your website and email are still functioning.
Auto-renewal: Confirm that auto-renewal is enabled in the new account and that a valid payment method is on file.
Domain privacy: Re-enable domain privacy if needed — it may need to be reactivated in the new account.
Expiration date: Note the domain's expiration date in the new account and set a calendar reminder.
Transferring to a Non-GoDaddy Account
If the receiving party doesn't have a GoDaddy account, you'll need to do a standard registrar transfer:
- Unlock the domain
- Get the authorization code
- The recipient initiates the transfer from their registrar
This takes 5–7 days and adds one year to the registration.
