Moving away from Wix and want to take your domain with you? Here is the step-by-step process to transfer your domain from Wix to GoDaddy without losing your website or email.
How to Transfer a Domain Name from Wix to GoDaddy
If you're moving your website from Wix to WordPress or another platform, you'll likely want to transfer your domain to a registrar that gives you more control. Here's how to transfer from Wix to GoDaddy.
Before You Start
60-day lock: Domains must be registered for at least 60 days before they can be transferred. If your domain is newer than 60 days, you'll need to wait.
Wix Premium plan required: You can only transfer a domain away from Wix if it was registered through Wix (not connected from an external registrar). You'll also need an active Wix Premium plan to access domain transfer settings.
Plan your timing: The transfer takes 5–7 days. If you're also migrating your website, coordinate the timing so you minimize downtime.
Step 1: Prepare Your Domain in Wix
- Log in to your Wix account
- Go to Domains in your Wix dashboard
- Click on the domain you want to transfer
- Look for Transfer Domain or Transfer Away from Wix
Step 2: Disable Domain Lock and Get Authorization Code
In Wix's domain settings:
- Disable the domain lock (also called "Transfer Lock" or "Registrar Lock")
- Request the authorization code (EPP code) — Wix will email it to the address on your account
- Save the authorization code
Note: If you have WHOIS privacy enabled, you may need to temporarily disable it to receive the authorization code.
Step 3: Initiate the Transfer at GoDaddy
- Log in to your GoDaddy account (or create one)
- Go to Domains → Transfer
- Enter your domain name
- Enter the authorization code from Wix
- Complete the purchase — the transfer fee typically includes one additional year of registration
Step 4: Approve the Transfer
GoDaddy will send a confirmation email. You may also receive an email from Wix asking you to approve the outgoing transfer. Approve it to speed up the process.
The transfer typically completes within 5–7 days.
Step 5: Update DNS Records After Transfer
Once the transfer completes, your domain's DNS is managed through GoDaddy. Update your DNS records to point to your new hosting provider.
If you're moving to WordPress hosting, you'll need to:
- Update the A record to point to your new hosting server's IP address
- Update the CNAME record for
www - Configure MX records for your email provider
What Happens to Your Wix Website?
Transferring your domain away from Wix doesn't automatically take down your Wix site — but once you update DNS to point to a new host, your Wix site will no longer be accessible at your domain. Make sure your new website is ready before updating DNS.
