How to Transfer a Domain from Squarespace to GoDaddy

How to Transfer a Domain from Squarespace to GoDaddy

If you're moving away from Squarespace and want to bring your domain with you, the transfer process is straightforward — but there are a few important steps to follow to avoid downtime.

Before You Start: Important Considerations

Read our guide on what to consider before transferring your domain registrar before you begin.

Timing: Domain transfers take 5–7 days to complete. Plan accordingly if you're also migrating your website.

60-day lock: ICANN requires that domains remain locked for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer. If your domain was recently registered or transferred, you'll need to wait.

Email: If you're using Squarespace Email Campaigns or have email connected to your domain, make sure you have a plan for email continuity during the transfer.

Step 1: Unlock Your Domain in Squarespace

  1. Log in to your Squarespace account
  2. Go to Settings → Domains
  3. Click on the domain you want to transfer
  4. Find the Transfer or Domain Lock option
  5. Disable the domain lock (unlock the domain)

Step 2: Get Your Authorization Code (EPP Code)

  1. In the same domain settings area in Squarespace, find the option to Get Authorization Code or Transfer Away from Squarespace
  2. Squarespace will email the authorization code to the email address on your account
  3. Save this code — you'll need it to initiate the transfer at GoDaddy

Step 3: Disable WHOIS Privacy (If Needed)

Some registrars require you to temporarily disable WHOIS privacy to receive the authorization code or complete the transfer. If you don't receive the code, try disabling privacy protection first.

Step 4: Initiate the Transfer at GoDaddy

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account (or create one if you don't have one)
  2. Go to Domains → Transfer
  3. Enter your domain name and click Transfer
  4. Enter the authorization code when prompted
  5. Complete the purchase — the transfer fee typically includes one additional year of registration

Step 5: Approve the Transfer

GoDaddy will send a confirmation email to the address on your account. You may also receive an email from Squarespace asking you to approve the transfer. Approve it promptly to speed up the process.

The transfer typically completes within 5–7 days.

Step 6: Update Your DNS Records

If you're also migrating your website, see our guide on how to migrate a WordPress site to new hosting for the full process.

After the transfer completes, your domain's DNS records will be managed through GoDaddy. You'll need to update them to point to your new hosting provider.

If you're moving to a new website platform (WordPress, for example), configure your DNS records to point to your new hosting server.
