Need to find your Windows 10 activation key? Here are the methods to retrieve your product key from your PC, and what to do if you need to replace or upgrade your Windows license.
How to Find Your Windows 10 Activation Key (And What to Do If You Need a New One)
Whether you're reinstalling Windows, replacing a hard drive, or just want to keep your license information on file, knowing how to find your Windows 10 activation key is useful. Here are the most reliable methods.
Method 1: Using Command Prompt
This is the quickest method for most users.
- Press Windows + R, type
cmd, and press Enter - In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:
wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey
If your key is stored in the system firmware (common on OEM computers), it will display here.
Note: This method works for OEM keys embedded in the BIOS/UEFI firmware. It may not display keys for retail or volume licenses.
Method 2: Using PowerShell
- Right-click the Start button and select Windows PowerShell (Admin)
- Enter this command:
(Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey
Method 3: Using a Third-Party Tool
Tools like ProduKey (NirSoft) or Belarc Advisor can retrieve your Windows product key along with other software licenses on your PC. These are free tools that are widely used by IT professionals.
Method 4: Check Your Original Purchase
- Retail box: The key is on a sticker inside the box or on a card
- Digital purchase from Microsoft: Check your Microsoft account order history
- OEM computer (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.): The key is typically embedded in the BIOS — use Method 1 or 2 above
- Volume license: Contact your IT administrator or check your Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center account
What If You Can't Find Your Key?
If you've lost your Windows 10 key and can't retrieve it, you have options:
Microsoft Account linking: If your Windows 10 installation is linked to a Microsoft account, you can reactivate Windows after reinstalling by signing in with that account — no product key needed.
Purchase a new license: Microsoft sells Windows 10 licenses through their website and authorized resellers.
Upgrade to Windows 11: If your hardware is compatible, Windows 11 is available as a free upgrade for activated Windows 10 installations.
