Do I Need Domain Protection from GoDaddy? Privacy vs. Premium Protection Explained

When you register a domain on GoDaddy, you'll be offered add-ons like "Domain Privacy" and "Full Domain Protection." Are these worth paying for? Here's an honest breakdown.

What Is WHOIS and Why Does It Matter?

When you register a domain, your contact information — name, address, phone number, and email — is stored in a public database called WHOIS. Anyone can look up who owns a domain.

Without privacy protection, your personal information is publicly visible. This leads to:

  • Spam emails and phone calls from domain brokers and marketers
  • Potential phishing attempts targeting domain owners
  • Your home address being publicly listed if you registered with personal details

GoDaddy Domain Privacy (Basic)

GoDaddy's basic domain privacy replaces your personal contact information in the WHOIS database with GoDaddy's proxy information. Your name and address are hidden from public view.

Cost: Typically a few dollars per year.

Is it worth it? Yes, for almost every business. The spam reduction alone is worth the small annual fee. If you registered with your home address, privacy protection is especially important.

GoDaddy Full Domain Protection (Premium)

GoDaddy's premium protection adds additional layers on top of basic privacy:

  • Domain locking to prevent unauthorized transfers
  • Monitoring for unauthorized changes to your DNS records
  • Alerts if someone attempts to transfer your domain

Cost: Higher annual fee than basic privacy.

Is it worth it? For most small businesses, the standard domain lock (which GoDaddy enables by default) provides adequate transfer protection. Premium protection is most valuable for high-value domains or businesses where a domain hijacking would cause significant financial damage.

What You Actually Need

For most small businesses, here's our recommendation:

  1. Enable basic domain privacy — always worth the small cost
  2. Keep domain locking enabled — GoDaddy enables this by default; don't turn it off
  3. Set up auto-renewal — the most common way businesses lose domains is simply forgetting to renew
  4. Use a strong, unique password on your GoDaddy account and enable two-factor authentication

The Most Important Domain Protection: Don't Let It Expire

More businesses lose their domains to expiration than to theft. Read our guide on the GoDaddy domain life cycle to understand the expiration timeline. Set up auto-renewal and make sure your payment method on file is current. A lapsed domain can be picked up by anyone within weeks.
