Already have a GoDaddy domain and want to use it with your Shopify store? Here is the step-by-step process to connect your GoDaddy domain to Shopify correctly.
How to Connect a GoDaddy Domain to Shopify (Step-by-Step)
If you registered your domain with GoDaddy and you're building your store on Shopify, you'll need to connect the two by updating your DNS records. Here's how to do it correctly.
Before You Start
Make sure you have:
- Access to your GoDaddy account (domain management)
- Access to your Shopify admin
- About 15–30 minutes (DNS changes take up to 48 hours to fully propagate)
Step 1: Get Your Shopify DNS Information
- Log in to your Shopify admin
- Go to Settings → Domains
- Click Connect existing domain
- Enter your GoDaddy domain name and click Next
- Shopify will show you the DNS records you need to add
You'll typically need:
- An A record pointing to Shopify's IP address (
23.227.38.65) - A CNAME record for
wwwpointing toshops.myshopify.com
Step 2: Update DNS Records in GoDaddy
- Log in to your GoDaddy account
- Go to My Products → Domains
- Click DNS next to your domain
- You'll see your current DNS records
Update the A Record:
- Find the existing A record for
@(or your root domain) - Edit it to point to Shopify's IP:
23.227.38.65 - Set TTL to 1 hour (or 3600 seconds)
Update the CNAME Record:
- Find the CNAME record for
www - Edit it to point to
shops.myshopify.com - Set TTL to 1 hour
Important: If GoDaddy has a "Forwarding" setting active on your domain, you'll need to remove it before DNS changes will work properly.
Step 3: Verify in Shopify
- Go back to your Shopify admin → Settings → Domains
- Click Verify connection next to your domain
- Shopify will check if the DNS records are correct
DNS propagation can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours. If verification fails immediately, wait a few hours and try again.
Step 4: Set Your Primary Domain in Shopify
Once verified, set your GoDaddy domain as the primary domain in Shopify so all traffic goes to your custom domain rather than the default .myshopify.com address.
Common Issues
"Domain not verified" error: DNS hasn't propagated yet. Wait and try again.
Forwarding conflict: GoDaddy's domain forwarding overrides DNS records. Remove any forwarding rules before updating DNS.
SSL not activating: Shopify automatically provisions SSL for connected domains — see our guide on website security and SSL for more context, but it can take a few hours after DNS propagates.
