Wondering if you can change your domain name on GoDaddy? The short answer is no — but there are smart ways to handle a rebrand or domain switch without losing traffic.
Can I Change My Domain Name on GoDaddy? What Business Owners Need to Know
One of the most common questions we hear from business owners going through a rebrand: "Can I just change my domain name on GoDaddy?"
The short answer is no — you cannot edit or rename a domain you've already registered. Domain names are registered as-is. Once yourbusiness.com is registered, that string is locked in for the life of the registration.
But that doesn't mean you're stuck. Here's what you can actually do.
Why You Can't "Change" a Domain Name
Domain names work like license plates — once issued, the specific combination of characters is registered in a global database (the registry). There's no "rename" function because the old name still exists as a separate registered asset.
If you want a different domain, you need to register a new one.
The Right Way to Switch Domain Names
Step 1: Register Your New Domain
Go to your registrar (or contact VSF Technology to handle it for you) and register the new domain name you want.
Step 2: Build or Move Your Website to the New Domain
Update your website to use the new domain as its primary address. This means updating your hosting configuration, SSL certificate, and any hardcoded URLs in your site.
Step 3: Set Up 301 Redirects from the Old Domain
Proper 301 redirects preserve your SEO value. Read our guide on how to transfer a domain without losing traffic for the full process.
This is the most important SEO step. Configure your old domain to 301-redirect all traffic to the new domain. This tells Google that the move is permanent and passes your existing search rankings to the new URL.
Without 301 redirects, you'll lose all the SEO value you've built on the old domain.
Step 4: Update Your Business Listings
Update your domain everywhere it appears:
- Google Business Profile
- Social media profiles
- Email signatures
- Business cards and printed materials
- Any directory listings or backlinks you control
Step 5: Keep the Old Domain Registered
Don't let the old domain expire. Keep it registered and redirecting for at least 1–2 years. This protects your brand and ensures anyone who bookmarked or linked to the old domain still reaches you.
How Long Does the Transition Take?
DNS changes propagate globally within 24–48 hours. Google typically re-indexes your new domain within a few weeks, though full ranking recovery can take 1–3 months depending on your site's authority.
